We keep arguing about knobs versus glass. Both are answers to a question the car should have stopped asking you.
The first time I drove a car built around one big screen, I expected to hate it. Everyone told me I would. I got in braced for a fussy, distracting mess, and instead I spent the whole drive forgetting the interface was even there. The map was huge and clear. My music was one glance away. And the two things I actually change while driving, the temperature and where the air points, I barely touched, because the car had mostly sorted them out before I noticed.
That is the drive that changed my mind. Not because the screen looked nice, but because it made me realize the whole “bring back the buttons” argument is aimed at the wrong target. The debate has quietly shrunk into a fight over input methods. Is a knob better than a slider. Is a slider better than an icon. The more interesting question is why the driver is being asked to manage cabin temperature by hand at all in 2026.
So I will just say it. The knob is nostalgia. It is not evil and it is not useless in an emergency, but for most of what we use it for, it is a small monument to a job that should not be mine anymore.
The knob nostalgia is a trap
The case for physical controls always comes down to one word. Blind. You can work a real button without looking. That much is true. But the argument sneaks in an assumption that falls apart the moment you sit in a rental car.
I have lived the counterexample plenty of times. You get into an unfamiliar car and the muscle memory is just gone, because physical layouts were never standardized. Every manufacturer put the hazard triangle in a different place, hid the rear defroster behind its own strange little symbol, and decided on a whim whether the volume knob went on the left or the right. So there I am, stopped at a light in a car I have had for ten minutes, patting a row of identical black buttons in the dark trying to find the heated seat. That is exactly the eyes off the road hunting the button crowd says it is protecting me from. A knob you have never touched is not intuitive. It is just a mystery with a nice click.
Software goes the other way, and this is the part I have come to like the most. A consistent interface can be learned once and carried everywhere. The same logic lives on the phone in my pocket, the tablet at home, and the panel in a car I rented an hour ago. Buttons freeze a layout in plastic for the length of a model cycle. The screen is the only part of the car that actually got better while I owned it. One over the air update moved a control I found annoying, and one morning it was simply where I wanted it. No dealer, no new car. Good luck getting a dial to do that.
Eyes off the road is a problem with tasks, not with glass
There is a trick hiding inside the safety argument. Yes, digging three menus deep on a touchscreen at speed is dangerous. But the danger is not the screen. It is that the task exists at all and that it wants your attention.
A driver fumbling for the right hard button is not watching the road either. A driver squinting at forty identical switches at night is not watching the road. All that research people quote about eyes off the road time is not really an argument for knobs. It is an argument for getting rid of the interaction completely, and that is the option the button revival never wants to talk about.
The real answer is already sitting in the car. It knows the cabin is cold, because it has a thermometer. It knows the sun is hitting the driver's side, because it has light sensors and often a camera pointed at my face. It knows I am on the highway, that it is seven in the morning, that this is the commute I make every weekday. A machine that knows all of that should not be waiting for me to reach for a dial. On the drive that won me over, it was not waiting. The temperature just crept up on its own as the morning warmed, and I never lifted a finger. That is the kind of climate control I want, the kind I never notice because I never had to touch it.
Voice is not a workaround. It is the point.
The usual way to wave off voice control is to say it fails when you need it. Road noise, an accent, a passenger talking over you. That was a fair complaint about the voice systems of five years ago, which were basically spoken menus that misheard you. It does not describe where things are now.
I use it all the time, and the moment that sold me was completely ordinary. Middle lane, both hands on the wheel, rain starting, and I just said I was cold. No zone, no target number, no fan speed. The car worked out what “I'm cold” meant and fixed it, and my eyes never left the windshield. A knob gives you one action. Voice gives you all of them without moving your hands or your eyes, which is the exact thing the safety people claim to care about. The newer models run without a signal, understand normal sentences instead of rigid commands, and hold enough context to follow a half sentence. Complaining that voice sometimes mishears is a strange thing to say while defending a system where you grab the wrong unlabeled button in the dark on a regular basis.
The aging driver argument points the other way
Populations are getting older, and the objection goes like this. Older buyers grew up with switches, so give them switches. But that gets the ergonomics backward.
A physical button is fixed forever. Its label is printed at one size, in one contrast, in one spot. If your eyes have changed or your hands are less steady, the button does not care. A screen can show that same control in text twice the size, in high contrast, with the two functions you actually use pulled to the top and the rest tucked away. Better yet, voice lets an older driver just say what they want and skip the fiddly hand movement entirely. The interface that adapts to a seventy year old is not the one molded in plastic for a body that no longer matches it. It is the one that can reshape itself, through settings, through voice, or through the car quietly doing more on its own.
Regulation should not lock in a shape
The part that worries me most is that the preference for hard buttons is starting to get written into the rules, with physical controls counting toward a top safety rating. I understand the instinct. But writing a specific piece of hardware into the standard is how you freeze the industry at the exact moment the better answers are showing up.
Regulators should be setting the goal, not the mechanism. A driver should be able to trigger the essential functions with as little time off the road as possible. Let manufacturers hit that with a button, a surface that clicks back under your finger, a solid voice layer, or automation that removes the task. The moment you name the mechanism instead of the outcome, you have told every engineer that the ceiling is a knob, and you have turned the genuinely useful voice assistant of 2030 into a compliance problem instead of a feature.
What I am actually asking for
I do not want a cabin that is harder to use. I want one that asks less of me.
Keep the real emergencies within reach. Nobody sane thinks the horn should be a menu. But stop selling the return of the knob as progress. Most of the controls we are fighting over should not be controls at all. The volume, the temperature, the vents, the lights. I do not want to find those faster. I want the car to have handled them before I noticed, and for everything else, I want to say it out loud and keep both hands on the wheel.
The button people say they want the car to stop demanding their attention. I want the same thing. We just disagree about the answer. Theirs is a nicer thing to press. Mine is nothing to press at all.
